FOLKESTONE CLOSED TOURNAMENT 2008 The Men's champion this year is Keith Yarnley winning the title for the third time, despite being in numerous finals over the years, Keith first won the title in 1981 and then again in 2003. The first semi-final for the Men's featured Keith against last years winner Ray Jordon in an excellent five set match. Ray took the first set with Keith winning the second, Ray claimed third, Keith then took the next two to take him to the final. The other semi saw number one seed Phil Saxby, who has won the title 12 times, play Phil Morford who was challenging for his first Men's title. Phil Saxby won the first two sets and it looked to be all over for Phil Morford but he upped his game and won the next three sets to beat the number one seed and go through to the final. A thrilling final was then played between Keith and Phil, fought out over 5 sets. Phil won the first set 11-7, Keith took the second 11-4. Phil came back and won the third 11-8. Keith fought back and won the fourth 11-5 to leave the match finely poised for the deciding set, in what proved to be a close final set the lead change several times with Keith finally beating Phil 11-9. The Men's Doubles final was played between last years winners Ray Jordon & Phil Saxby & Mark Stanton & Kevin Powell. Mark & Kevin knocked out the number two seeds Lee Edgington & Phil Morford in the semis, Ray & Phil Saxby reached the final by beating Trevor Hart & Rob Huntley who had earlier had a fine win over Keith Yarnley & Steve Bispham. The final was won by Mark Stanton & Kevin Powell in a four set thriller.The Mixed Doubles was won by Keith & Laura Yarnley who beat Phil Saxby & Sue Bispham in a close fought five sets. Laura had an excellent tournament also winning the Girls u18 singles, beating Jenna Bispham, Junior Mixed & Band A titles where she beat Mark Jones. Sister Gemma Yarnley in a break from University studies returned to win the Ladies final beating Leanne Hart in 3 sets, Leanne had some excellent wins to reach the final. Gemma teamed up with Sue Bispham to win the Ladies Doubles beating Barbara Rutherford & Wendy Newsham in the final. John Bispham proved much too strong in the boys junior events winning the U18's beating Franklyn Frantos in the final, he also won the Boys Doubles teaming up with Ryan Oclee, they beat James Donald & Adam Owen in the final. John partnered Laura Yarnley in the junior mixed and they comfortably beat Franklyn Frantos & Jenna Bispham. Franklyn who was playing at his first tournament did extremely well getting to 4 finals: Boys U18, Junior Mixed, Band C Singles & Handicap competition. In the Banded Doubles event husband & wife pair Steve & Pam Powell beat Bob Thomason & Sue Bispham. The Handicap event was won by Dover player Cliff Smallman who beat Franklyn Frantos in a close game. The popular Allocated Doubles was won by Kevin Leppard & Mark Jones beating Kevin Coleman & Mike Galvan. Other winners were Ron Wood in the Band B Singles who beat Leanne Hart, Evelyn Baker who beat Franklyn Frantos in the Band C Singles. With so many games played it was inevitable that it would be a long day, a good crowd stayed to watch the finals and were witness to some excellent table tennis.
